The Mist Rose

THE MIST ROSE
The sea glittered far and wide
in the sun’s dying rays;
we sat by the fisherman’s lonely house;
we sat silent and alone.
The mist rose, the waters swelled,
and a seagull flew to and fro.
And from your loving eyes
tears upon tears were falling.
I saw them falling upon your hand.
I sank down to my knees;
and out of your innocent hand
I tried to drink the tears away.
But since that hour my body is consumed
and my soul dies of longing.
For now I lie here poisoned
from drinking that poor woman's tears.

The Doppelgänger

THE DOPPELGANGER
Dark is the night
The streets are deserted
The house where my love lived
There, just like before...
It must be years now
Since she was last here
And even more years
Since I stood by her door.
But there’s someone else
Who stares at her window
He’s wracked with anguish
In pain and in woe
How I shudder
When, in a flash of moonlight
I see his face, it’s a face that I know.
You doppelgänger
So pale and so haunted
How dare you mock my misery?
How dare you suffer what I suffered?
So many nights
So long ago
